We're committed are you? - REGIONAL AQUA INSTRUCTORS TRAINED
All Aquatic facilities want to get aqua instructors up to speed and productive as quickly as possible, especially in regional areas where aqua exercise classes are booming. So in the last 3 months our trainers have been busy providing the WETS Aqua Instructor Course at:

  • Aqua Energy - Sale (Gippsland)
  • Bond University (Gold Coast)
  • Launceston Aquatic Centre (Tasmania)
  • YMCA Echuca Aquatic Centre

The course includes learning "Instructor Intelligence" - this involves gaining skills to effectively observe, analyse and if necessary modify participant technique. This form of learning for the WETS student is based on the multifaceted analytical, creative and practical learning model - we are proud of our successful teaching methods.

We understand the needs and aspirations of our new aqua instructors and provide practical solutions to satisfy their long-term objectives.

An effective learning environment should be challenging, thought provoking, enabling and above all fun - and according to internal and external audits this happens at our interactive courses. In 2010 the WETS crew will be traveling the country providing quality training courses and workshops to more Instructors in more locations through out Australia. One suggestion we like is that we fit out a Priscilla Bus to transport our wares!
Stay tuned - the 2010 WETS Training calendar is a work in progress and will be posted at regular intervals.

This month we feature the Big M. As with all the 'Moves' it is imperative that you experience these movement patterns in the water yourself. Experience and learning go hand in hand. Download the PDF for Move of the Month by clicking here.

 Topic 1 - Energy Expenditure

When our bodies use oxygen to breakdown and use energy, such as fats, stored in our cells, the result is energy expenditure. There are three general elements of energy expenditure:

  • 1. Resting metabolism - the energy our body uses to sustain vital functions.
  • 2. Thermogenic effect of food - the energy required by our body to consume and then to digest, transport, metabolise and store by products of our food.
  • 3. Physical activity - the energy expended by our bodies during physical activity and recovery.
For the purpose of reading this research article, it is easiest to think of energy expenditure as the kilocalories (kcal) expended whilst exercising.

Whilst, the studies referred to in the research article below refer to total numbers of energy expended during different exercises it is important to remember that these results are an average. A number of other factors, including height and weight, gender and age, will contribute to differences when analysing the calories burned whilst exercising of any individual

Kruel L, Posser M, Alberton C, Pinto S, & Oliveira A 2009, "Comparison of Energy Expenditure Between Continuous and Interval Water Aerobic Routines", Human Kinetics, Vol. 3, pp. 186-196
The aim of present study was to analyse the oxygen uptake, the heart rate, and the energetic expenditure of women in two water aerobics routines: continuous and interval. The sample comprised ten (10) voluntary active women (average age 22) that performed two water aerobic routines with a minimal interval of 48 hours and randomized order. Each routine was performed with the same exercises and duration, along 32 minutes. The intensity was controlled through Borg's rate of perceived exertion (RPE), adopting RPE 13 for continuous and RPE 17 and RPE 9 for interval routines. It was utilized the paired t test, with the level of significance at < .05 (SPSS version 13.0). For all variables, it has been found in interval significantly higher values than continuous routine. Thus it can be concluded that the interval routine is more intense, being indicated for people looking for a major energetic expenditure.

 AQUA STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Robyn McGraw attended the Pakenham course in 2008 - she was pregnant, very enthusiastic and keen to gain her qualification. There was a class waiting for her at the Warragul Pool. It was however, understandable that Robyn was apprehensive about completing the course requirements within the time frame and being in 'her condition'.

The WETS trainers were able to assist Robyn successfully complete the course. She took up the offer to demonstrate her practical presentation at a Monday class with JSP. - Dad and the TWINS proudly watched mum deliver her class - all competent boxes were ticked! Robyn went home to the kids

WETS follows the flexible learning model and responds to the ever-changing needs and expectations of all students participating in this vocational educational training. In appreciation of your contribution to the aqua world Robyn please accept a complimentary WETS workshop

WETS DVDs We tested the water in 2009 and were pleased with the positive response to WETS AquaMoves1. So the team have been 'harrasing' JSP to extract the 1,269 other moves and concepts JSP has used over the past 21 years. We think we have had success. make-up, standby, action, cut, - yes she's done it. Stay tuned as they will be released at AquaSummit 09 and on the website during October. Its not difficult 'creating' the moves - its just hard work extrapolating it from JSP's head!

The WETS AquaFrame High quality stainless steel is the selected material for the WETS AquaFrame. Stainless steel is known for its ability to be a clean surface that resists corrosion and rust. Dirt, grime and certain chemicals such as chlorine, however put stainless steel at risk for corrosion and rust. Luckily, stainless steel responds well to cleaning, never wearing out from excessive cleaning, as long as certain rules are followed. So just consider if you didn't maintain your gym equipment or your own health! Now it's time to place the same value on this innovative and useful aqua teaching tool.

Easy Preventative Maintenance tips to ensure a long WETS AquaFrame life

  • 1. The aqua instructor wipes down the WETS AquaFrame with a dry towel/cloth after each class.
  • 2. Keep the AquaFrame clear of the 'hosing down' process at the end of the day.
  • 3. Routine cleaning (approx once a month) wash with soap or a mild detergent and warm water.
  • 4. An enhanced appearance will be achieved if the cleaned surface is finally wiped dry.
  • 5. If you've had staining or scratching, a stainless steel cleaner may be a good option. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and towel dry.

Maybe your WETS AquaFrame could do with a 'make over'! Order an AquaFrame spare parts pack to receive new foam handles, rubber stoppers and cleaning cloth for your Frame. Even better why not ask one of the WETS trainers to provide a training session for the aqua instructors at your pool and they can transform the AquaFrame for you whilst they are there.

UPCOMING CONFERENCES The WETS team will be busy bees over the next few months. In September we'll be visiting the AquaSummit. Visit the WETS stand at AquaSummit and present your print-out coupon which can be found a by clicking here. ***AquaSummit Coupon.***
